SMVDU was created under an Act of the J&K State Legislature in 1999 as a fully residential technical University, the first of it's kind in J&K. Recognized by UGC under Section 2(f) & 12(B) of the UGC Act of 1956, the university receives funding from UGC. The University is also making an effort to create an extensive university-industry cooperation for economic growth of the area as well as the rest of the country. There are many on going research projects with assistance from many supporting institutions.
